Analysis of incoming satellite data, data handling and PC performance

In order to receive and handle all sorts of satellite data in a reliable way several PC-s have been networked together, each performing specific tasks.

The systems that are directly or indirectly involved in satellite data reception and handling are Larsen, Prudhoe, Svalbard and Qaanaaq.

Larsen receives the full 12 channels HRIT MSG-2 data stream, all FSD data (Goes East and West, MTSAT, Meteosat 7, Feng Yun 2C), MPEF, CMA, DWD and various SAF-s. It furthermore receives the MSG-1 rapid scan 5 minute data, the METOP AVHRR and GAC stream as well as AVHRR from the NOAA satellites.

The machine runs Windows-XP pro SP-3, has a Quad CPU Q6600 on a P5W ASUS motherboard with 4 GB memory installed. The receiver is an external DVB-World USB-2 box with driver version 6.2.0.1 installed.

Prudhoe receives the full 12 channels HRIT MSG-2 data stream, all FSD data (Goes East and West, MTSAT, Meteosat 7, Feng Yun 2C), DWD and Sea Ice SAF. It furthermore receives the METOP AVHRR and GAC stream as well as AVHRR from the NOAA satellites.

The machine runs Windows-XP pro SP-3, has a Quad CPU Q6600 on a P5W ASUS motherboard with 4 GB memory installed. The receiver is an external DVB-World USB-2 box with driver version 6.1.0.1 installed.

Svalbard receives the full 12 channels HRIT MSG-2 data stream, all FSD data (Goes East and West, MTSAT, Meteosat 7, Feng Yun 2C), DWD and Sea Ice SAF. This machine is used for reception of all other temporarily relevant data.

The machine runs Windows-XP pro SP-2, has a one core two logical processors Intel P-4 2.6 GHz on a 8IPE1000 Gigabyte motherboard with 4 GB memory installed. The receiver is a TechniSat DVB-PC TV Star PCI card version 2.6D with driver version 4.1.1.6 installed.

Qaanaaq is the work horse of the set, which is used for common tasks, product development, image analysis and processing and test bed.

The machine runs Windows-XP pro SP-3, has a Quad CPU Q6600 on a P5W ASUS motherboard with 4 GB memory installed. Two NVIDIA GeForce 9600GT PCI Express cards allow for a four monitor setup with at left A4 portrait, center two screens combined as 2560x1024 pixels and at the right a full HD 1920 x 1024 for HD video production.
